Johannesburg – The Democratic Union (DA) says that a revival of load suppression will result in “more economic devastation” and “leaving the family in the chaos of our entire country.”
DA's comments were implementing stage 2 load reduction in response to Eskom's evening announcement on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 (March 19, 2025).
“We have made significant advances in our generational recovery efforts, but Eskom faced losses of five generation units prior to the peak period,” said Daphne Mokwena, spokesman for Eskom.
“As a result, Stage 2 load suppression will be implemented at 18:25 and will be effective until 5:00 tomorrow.
“In light of ongoing system constraints, we encourage the public to use electricity sparingly.”
However, Kevin Mileham MP and DA spokesman for Electricity & Energy said:
Mileham added:
“We stand together in anger.
“This illustrates the indisputable need for a competitive energy generation market.”
Mailem said the DA is seeking Eskom's immediate horizontal influx, breaking its monopoly and ending its ongoing failure to meet South Africa's electricity needs.
“South Africa needs the capacity of a new generation to be built now,” Mailem said.
“This is an immediate and urgent concern for our country.”
Meanwhile, Eskom said, “We apologize for the inconvenience and sincerely apologize for continuing to provide updates when necessary.”
