Adult training is known by many names and focuses on improving the integration of knowledge and skill development for school leavers. Also sometimes referred to as adult learning, the policy displays basic education and training (ABET) for adults. The journey to become something today was complicated and piloted by the labor and industrial sectors. Ultimately, an integration of education, education and training based on outcomes or competence was established. It took shape when the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) Act (No. 58 of 1995) was passed. This meant that education and training began to be integrated into one National Qualification Framework (NQF).
The government and all stakeholders have implemented this competency or standards-based system to address global competitiveness and an effective workforce. In theory, this means that South African adult training is lined with international standards and encourages our workforce to compete on a global scale.

What is the training business?
Training Business, – Business, or training provider is used interchangeably to mean the same thing. These organizations focus on providing basic education and training for adults, from technical to soft skills.
Training providers provide services to learners including guidance, providing course/training materials, and guidance to become competent (ABET speaks of “passing” a course; learners are either capable during the assessment or are not yet competent). Other additional services can also be provided, such as moderated, managing the certificate receipt process, or registering clients with their respective regulatory bodies (SETAs).
These companies often consist of staff who assist with administrative tasks such as bookkeeping, finance, training scheduling, marketing, and secretary work. However, industry-specific jobs include staff who are facilitators, evaluators and moderators.
How to Become a Certified Training Provider
If you want to be a certified training provider, there are two aspects.
First, you need to establish a training business, then you need certification.
Legal requirements
All legal and regulatory requirements for starting a business apply to the establishment of a company. Therefore, you will need to go through the registration process, open a bank account, find the business properties to rent, create a business plan, develop pricing.
It is important to note that your business needs to focus on how to develop that niche. You need to understand the area of your business that you run. Is it to train artisans? Do you offer first aid training? General office work certification? Or do you bring unique expertise from industries such as aviation, agriculture, tourism, and more?
From here you can improve your niche. What do you offer besides facilitation and course materials? What is your unique approach that other training providers don't have?
Certification requirements
Once the above is complete, you must ensure that your training facility is certified. This includes:
ETDP SETA certified for facilitators, evaluators and moderators. Certification of all programs intended to be offered. This is available from Trade and Occupation for Quality Council (QCTO) and SETA commissioned by QCTO. Please make sure it is registered with the appropriate setter. Make sure you develop and certified your training program. You can rely on freelance learning designers for this, or you can purchase training materials from other training providers. Make sure you have a proven track record for all of the above certifications. (Proven track record is the term paper trail trainer). You must also register with the Ministry of Education. Study materials provided based on qualifications for a particular unit standard program must be categorized within the scope of the registered SETA. The program or unit standard must be registered within the NQF. You need to provide learning support. The assessment methods used to measure competence must be fair, valid and reliable to enhance learning. Qualified learning designers developing assessment tools will ensure that these criteria are met.
How to apply to become a training provider
According to the government website, applicants must follow the steps below:
Send a letter of your intention to be accredited as a provider of education and training to the relevant ETQA. Submit your self-assessment and application form to ETQA. If the certification is not recognized and the process feels unfair, you have the right to appeal. This process takes up to six months, but is freely applicable (and appeal). When you apply for ETQA, you will receive all relevant documents.
Measures to be recognized
This outlines the steps that you need to follow during the certification process.
The provider must compile the requirements of the QCTO Quality Assurance Management Department. The training provider will then need to submit a completed certification application. The QCTO will perform a compliance check and will then be notified of the training business of compliance or non-compliance. You must respond as needed. Once your business is compliant, you become a QCTO evaluator. A report of your assessment will be sent. The status of the certification will be displayed. If no certification has been awarded yet, an overview of the area of restoration is outlined. After the certification is awarded, the company can confirm registration with DHET
Start a training business and arm yourself with the knowledge of how to become a certified training provider and become a business that will enhance your skills among South Africans.
